एवम् एतत् पुरावृत्तं तेषाम् अक्लिष्टकर्मणाम् ॥

Bibhatsu (Arjuna) rescued the great asura Maya there; and he built a wondrous assembly hall, adorned with every kind of gem. Coveting it in his greed, the dull-witted, deeply ill-natured Duryodhana set his heart upon it; and then, through Shakuni, son of Subala, having deceitfully defeated Yudhishthira at dice, he sent the Pandavas into the forest for twelve years, and the thirteenth year to live unrecognized in some kingdom. Then, in the fourteenth year, when they asked for their own property, they did not receive it, O great king — and then war broke out. Then they, having destroyed all the armies and slain King Duryodhana, obtained the kingdom, for the most part devastated — these Pandavas. Such was this deed of theirs of old, the untiring in exploits: discord, and the ruin of the kingdom, and victory, O best of the victorious.

Here the brief summary reaches its sorrowful center: the dice game, the exile, the war, and a 'victory over a devastated kingdom.' The final word is telling: the Pandavas obtain a kingdom 'for the most part devastated' (vidruta-bhūyiṣṭha) — their victory is bitter, purchased at the cost of nearly everyone's destruction. This is the epic's central moral: strife among kinsmen, kindled by greed and deceit in a game of dice, brings genuine triumph to no one — even the righteous Pandavas rule over ashes. Thus scripture names the outcome, in a single breath, both 'victory' (jaya) and 'the ruin of the kingdom' (rājya-vināśa); for in a fratricidal war, victory is itself defeat. Note that the root of the whole calamity is neither valor nor fate as such, but Duryodhana's greed ('he coveted the hall') and Shakuni's deceit — so the sin of a single heart brings ruin to millions. With this sorrowful foreshadowing, Vaishampayana concludes the brief overview — and will go on to unfold the entire tale in detail.
