Here is the heart of the "descent of portions": it is proclaimed who the chief heroes truly are. The contrast is telling: Yudhishthira is Dharma (righteousness itself), Duryodhana is Kali (the very spirit of the dark age); thus the war of the Bharatas is the clash of Dharma and Kali, of righteousness and vice, in human form. Especially weighty is the proclamation: "Narayana, the god of gods, eternal — his portion was Vasudeva (Krishna)"; that is, Krishna is not a "portion" in the ordinary sense but the Supreme Lord Himself, the source of all avataras (though the text modestly says "amsha," the tradition understands the full descent — purna-avatara). It is significant that the Pandavas are sons of the gods (Dharma, the Wind, Indra, the Ashvins), and the Lord Himself is their kinsman and friend — hence "where Krishna is, there is victory." Note too Karna, a portion of the Sun, born in armor: a noble hero who nevertheless fights on the side of adharma — an image of the tragedy of valor serving an unjust cause. Thus scripture reveals the whole disposition of forces: the gods and the Lord are with the Pandavas; the demons and Kali are with the Kauravas; and the coming battle is a cosmic confrontation of good and evil.
