'Then the valiant son of Dhritarashtra, having learned of Bhimasena's greatly renowned strength, revealed his wicked nature. In him, fallen away from dharma, looking only upon evil deeds, out of delusion and greed for power a wicked thought was born: "This best of the mighty, Kunti's son Vrikodara, the middle one among Pandu's sons, let him be slain by treachery; then, having forcibly bound in fetters the younger one after him and the eldest, Yudhishthira, I shall rule the earth." Thus, having made this resolve, the wicked Duryodhana constantly watched for an opportunity against the great-souled Bhima.'

Here the true root of the enmity is revealed -- Duryodhana's corrupted heart. Telling is how the scripture depicts the birth of evil: "fallen away from dharma," "looking only upon evil deeds," driven by "delusion and greed for power" (moha and aishvarya-lobha). This is the precise anatomy of sin: first the mind turns away from dharma, then attaches itself to evil, and out of delusion and greed a wicked design is born. Telling, too, is that Duryodhana plots not honest rivalry but treacherous murder (nikriti -- deceit): his evil is conscious and cold-blooded, unlike Bhima's innocent high spirits. So the scripture clearly separates the two sides: Bhima is strong without malice, Duryodhana is malicious in the very design; and the great enmity to come is rooted not in the superiority of the righteous, but in the envy and lust for power of the unrighteous.
