ततो बद्ध्वा लतापाशैर् भीमं दुर्योधनः शनैः ॥
गम्भीरं भीमवेगं च स्थलाज् जलम् अपातयत् ॥
ततः प्रबुद्धः कौन्तेयः सर्वं संछिद्य बन्धनम् ॥
उदतिष्ठज् जलाद् भूयो भीमः प्रहरतां वरः ॥
सुप्तं चापि पुनः सर्पैस् तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रैर् महाविषैः ॥
कुपितैर् दंशयाम् आस सर्वेष्व् एवाङ्गमर्मसु ॥
दंष्ट्राश् च दंष्ट्रिणां तेषां मर्मस्व् अपि निपातिताः ॥
त्वचं नैवास्य बिभिदुः सारत्वात् पृथुवक्षसः ॥
प्रतिबुद्धस् तु भीमस् तान् सर्वान् सर्पान् अपोथयत् ॥
सारथिं चास्य दयितम् अपहस्तेन जघ्निवान् ॥
tato baddhvā latāpāśair bhīmaṃ duryodhanaḥ śanaiḥ ||
gambhīraṃ bhīmavegaṃ ca sthalāj jalam apātayat ||
tataḥ prabuddhaḥ kaunteyaḥ sarvaṃ saṃchidya bandhanam ||
udatiṣṭhaj jalād bhūyo bhīmaḥ praharatāṃ varaḥ ||
suptaṃ cāpi punaḥ sarpais tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrair mahāviṣaiḥ ||
kupitair daṃśayām āsa sarveṣv evāṅgamarmasu ||
daṃṣṭrāś ca daṃṣṭriṇāṃ teṣāṃ marmasv api nipātitāḥ ||
tvacaṃ naivāsya bibhiduḥ sāratvāt pṛthuvakṣasaḥ ||
pratibuddhas tu bhīmas tān sarvān sarpān apothayat ||
sārathiṃ cāsya dayitam apahastena jaghnivān ||
"Then, having bound the sleeping Bhima with cords of vines, Duryodhana quietly cast him from the bank into the deep, swift-currented water. But the awakened son of Kunti, tearing apart all the bonds, rose again out of the water, Bhima, best of fighters. And when he slept once more, Duryodhana had enraged, sharp-fanged, greatly venomous serpents bite him on every vital point of his body; but the fangs of those serpents, though driven even into the vital points, did not so much as pierce his skin, owing to the toughness of his broad-chested body. Awakening, however, Bhima crushed all those serpents and killed Duryodhana's beloved charioteer with a blow of the back of his hand."

Here the first attempts against Bhima are made and come to nothing. It is telling that neither water nor the deadly venom of serpents can harm him: bound and thrown into the depths, he tears the bonds apart; bitten by the most venomous of snakes, their fangs cannot pierce his skin. Here is the working of a higher protection over the righteous: whom providence guards, neither element, nor poison, nor treachery can overcome. It is telling, too, that Bhima, on waking, at once crushes the serpents -- his strength turns back upon the instruments of evil. So the scripture shows a consoling truth: schemes against those who are watched over from above are in vain, and often turn against the very evildoer (Duryodhana's own charioteer perishes). Bhima is invulnerable not by his own power alone, but as one through whom the work of dharma is to be accomplished.
