Here Karna withdraws before what he takes for a brahmin's might. It is telling that, deeming "brahmic power invincible," he steps back from the fight: reverence for the strength of the sacred restrains even the fearless. Here an involuntary humility before the spiritual shows itself: Karna retreats not from fear of a man but before a superiority he honors. Telling too is what lies hidden: he retreats before Arjuna himself, taking him for a brahmin. Thus the verse shows that even the proud bow before what is higher; and Karna, in withdrawing, unknowingly yields to the rival destined for him.
