युद्धं तूपेयतुस् तत्र राजञ् शल्यवृकोदरौ ॥
बलिनौ युगपन् मत्तौ स्पर्धया च बलेन च ॥
अन्योन्यम् आह्वयन्तौ तौ मत्ताव् इव महागजौ ॥
मुष्टिभिर् जानुभिश् चैव निघ्नन्ताव् इतरेतरम् ॥
मुहूर्तं तौ तथान्योन्यं समरे पर्यकर्षताम् ॥
yuddhaṃ tūpeyatus tatra rājañ śalyavṛkodarau ||
balinau yugapan mattau spardhayā ca balena ca ||
anyonyam āhvayantau tau mattāv iva mahāgajau ||
muṣṭibhir jānubhiś caiva nighnantāv itaretaram ||
muhūrtaṃ tau tathānyonyaṃ samare paryakarṣatām ||
"A battle then arose there, O king, between Shalya and Vrikodara, both mighty, at once enraged, driven by rivalry and by strength; calling to one another like two enraged great elephants, striking one another with fists and knees, for a while they wrestled thus in the clash."

Here, alongside the duel of bows, a struggle of strong men boils over. It is telling that Bhima and Shalya close in hand to hand, like elephants: where Arjuna is skilled with the arrow, there Bhima is mighty in the strength of his body. Here it is seen that each has his own gift: one is strong in the arrow, the other in the arms. Thus the verse shows the twofold valor of the brothers; and the clash of Bhima with Shalya is another face of that same unconquerable strength of the Pandavas.
