Here the gifts serve as a token of restored kinship. It is telling that Vidura distributes what the Kauravas sent to everyone -- to the Pandavas, to Kunti, to Draupadi, to the sons of Drupada: reconciliation is sealed by generosity toward all sides. This reveals that a good embassy carries not words alone but deeds of good will. Thus scripture displays the material tokens of peace; and the gifts precede the Pandavas' return.
