अथ मायां पुनः देवाः तयोः चक्रुः महात्मनोःatha māyāṃ punaḥ devāḥ tayoḥ cakruḥ mahātmanoḥthen the gods once again wrought an illusion [maya] upon those two great ones:
भगिन्यः मातरः भार्याः तयोः परिजनः तथाbhaginyaḥ mātaraḥ bhāryāḥ tayoḥ parijanaḥ tathātheir sisters, mothers, wives, and household folk --
परिपात्यमानाः वित्रस्ताः शूलहस्तेन रक्षसाparipātyamānāḥ vitrastāḥ śūlahastena rakṣasāpursued, in terror, by a rakshasa with a spear in hand,
स्रस्ताभरणकेशान्ताः एकान्तभ्रष्टवाससःsrastābharaṇakeśāntāḥ ekāntabhraṣṭavāsasaḥtheir ornaments and hair disheveled, their garments flung about,
अभिधाव्य ततः सर्वाः तौ त्राहि इति विचुक्रुशुःabhidhāvya tataḥ sarvāḥ tau trāhi iti vicukruśuḥrunning up, all of them cried out to the two: "Save us!"
न च तौ चक्रतुः भङ्गं व्रतस्य सुमहाव्रतौna ca tau cakratuḥ bhaṅgaṃ vratasya sumahāvrataubut those two, men of a great vow, did not break their vow;

Here not even the sight of their kin perishing shook their vow. It is telling that the brothers held firm even before the seeming disaster of their mothers and wives: their goal consumed them entirely. Here a duality shows itself: their firmness was such that not even compassion turned them aside -- yet firmness in evil is only obstinacy in ruin. Thus the scripture shows the asuras' extreme inflexibility; and the gods, powerless to break it, withdraw.
