भक्ष्यतां भुज्यतां नित्यं रम्यतां गीयताम् इति ॥
पीयतां दीयतां चेति वाच आसन् गृहे गृहे ॥
तत्र तत्र महापानैर् उत्कृष्टतलनादितैः ॥
हृष्टं प्रमुदितं सर्वं दैत्यानाम् अभवत् पुरम् ॥
तैस् तैर् विहारैर् बहुभिर् दैत्यानां कामरूपिणाम् ॥
समाः संक्रीडतां तेषाम् अहर् एकम् इवाभवत् ॥
bhakṣyatāṃ bhujyatāṃ nityaṃ ramyatāṃ gīyatām iti ||
pīyatāṃ dīyatāṃ ceti vāca āsan gṛhe gṛhe ||
tatra tatra mahāpānair utkṛṣṭatalanāditaiḥ ||
hṛṣṭaṃ pramuditaṃ sarvaṃ daityānām abhavat puram ||
tais tair vihārair bahubhir daityānāṃ kāmarūpiṇām ||
samāḥ saṃkrīḍatāṃ teṣām ahar ekam ivābhavat ||
"'Let them eat, let them feast forever, let them rejoice, let them sing, let them drink, let them give gifts' -- such words were heard in house after house; here and there, with great drinking-bouts resounding with the clapping of hands, joyful and exultant became the whole city of the daityas; with those many pastimes of the daityas, who could change their shape at will, the years of those reveling became as a single day."

Here rapture in pleasure swallows time itself. It is telling that "the years became as a single day": in the haze of feasting and indulgence, the count of time is lost, and with it, sobriety of spirit. Here is revealed how unrestrained pleasure lulls conscience to sleep and prepares the ground for a fall. Thus does scripture show the revelry of the asuras; and after this drunken timelessness comes their war of conquest and their fated ruin.
