जग्मुर् विषादं तत् कर्म दृष्ट्वा सुन्दोपसुन्दयोः ॥
एवं सर्वा दिशो दैत्यौ जित्वा क्रूरेण कर्मणा ॥
निःसपत्नौ कुरुक्षेत्रे निवेशम् अभिचक्रतुः ॥

"The moon and sun, the planets, stars, constellations, and the dwellers of heaven fell into despair, seeing that deed of Sunda and Upasunda; thus, having conquered every quarter of the world through cruel deeds, the two daityas, having no rivals, established their dwelling at Kurukṣetra."

Here heaven itself grieves over the triumph of evil. It is telling that the heavenly bodies "fall into despair": the universe suffers when lawlessness comes to reign. It is telling too that the asuras set up their dwelling at Kurukṣetra — the field of the judgment to come. Here it is shown that the triumph of evil is illusory and brief: where it has risen, there it will also fall. Thus the scripture shows the grief of the universe; and the brothers' undivided dominion is the eve of their own destruction.
