न अजितान् वै नर-पतीन्na ajitān vai nara-patīnnot [any] unconquered kings
अहम् आदद्मि कांश् चनaham ādadmi kāṃś canado I take [captive], whoever they be;
जितः कः पर्यवस्थाताjitaḥ kaḥ paryavasthātā[once] conquered — who opposes me?
कः अत्र यः न मया जितःkaḥ atra yaḥ na mayā jitaḥwho here is not conquered by me?

Here the tyrant dresses villainy in the garments of dharma — 'such, indeed, is the law of the kshatriya.' It is telling how deftly falsehood invokes a rule while perverting it: he interprets the right of victory as the right to do any evil to the vanquished. Thus scripture shows how dangerous is the distortion of dharma in justification of cruelty; what follows is his refusal.
