Suvarchas said: 'Since his wife Savitri is united with austerity, self-control, and right conduct, Satyavan is alive.' Gautama said: 'I have studied the Vedas with their auxiliary texts, accumulated great austerity, kept brahmacharya since youth, satisfied my teachers and the sacred fire, and performed vows, fasts, and living on air alone. By this austerity I know: Satyavan remains alive.' The disciple confirmed: 'My teacher's word is never false; therefore Satyavan is alive.' The rishis said: 'Savitri bears all the auspicious marks that ward off widowhood; therefore Satyavan is alive.' Bharadvaja repeated the point about her austerity, self-control, and conduct. Dalbhya said: 'Your sight has returned, Savitri's vow remains unbroken, and she has not yet eaten; therefore Satyavan is alive.' Mandavya judged by the peaceful direction, the calls of beasts and birds, and the royal signs. Dhaumya said: 'Your son is endowed with every virtue, beloved of the people, and bears the marks of long life; therefore Satyavan is alive.' Consoled by these truthful ascetics, Dyumatsena held himself steady, pondering their arguments.

The sages read reality through dharma: Savitri's conduct, the signs of nature, and the power of truthful speech all point to life. For them, truth is never separate from the world.
