Traducción

Yudhishthira said: 'O foremost of kings, I wish to know how it came about that the illustrious Indra, together with his queen, endured such great and unprecedented suffering.' Shalya said: 'Listen, O king, and I shall tell you this ancient tale of events long past, of how, O descendant of Bharata, misfortune befell Indra and his wife. Once Tvashtri, lord of creatures and greatest of the gods, engaged in severe austerities. And it is said that out of enmity toward Indra he begot a son with three heads. And this being of universal form, possessed of great splendor, coveted the place of Indra. And having these three terrible faces, resembling the sun, the moon, and fire, with one mouth he recited the Vedas, with another he drank wine, and with the third he gazed as though ready to drink in all the quarters of the sky. And, given to the practice of austerity, gentleness, and self-control, he was resolved to lead a life filled with religious observances and austerities.'
