बाढम् इत्य् एव ऋषयस् तम् ऊचुर् भरतर्षभ ॥
एवं कृते तु संधाने वृत्रः प्रमुदितो ऽभवत् ॥
यत्तः सदाभवच् चापि शक्रो ऽमर्षसमन्वितः ॥
वृत्रस्य वधसंयुक्तान् उपायान् अनुचिन्तयन् ॥
रन्ध्रान्वेषी समुद्विग्नः सदाभूद् बलवृत्रहा ॥
स कदा चित् समुद्रान्ते तम् अपश्यन् महासुरम् ॥
संध्याकाल उपावृत्ते मुहूर्ते रम्यदारुणे ॥
ततः संचिन्त्य भगवान् वरदानं महात्मनः ॥
संध्येयं वर्तते रौद्रा न रात्रिर् दिवसं न च ॥
वृत्रश् चावश्यवध्यो ऽयं मम सर्वहरो रिपुः ॥
यदि वृत्रं न हन्म्य् अद्य वञ्चयित्वा महासुरम् ॥
महाबलं महाकायं न मे श्रेयो भविष्यति ॥

bāḍham ity eva ṛṣayas tam ūcur bharatarṣabha ||
evaṃ kṛte tu saṃdhāne vṛtraḥ pramudito 'bhavat ||
yattaḥ sadābhavac cāpi śakro 'marṣasamanvitaḥ ||
vṛtrasya vadhasaṃyuktān upāyān anucintayan ||
randhrānveṣī samudvignaḥ sadābhūd balavṛtrahā ||
sa kadā cit samudrānte tam apaśyan mahāsuram ||
saṃdhyākāla upāvṛtte muhūrte ramyadāruṇe ||
tataḥ saṃcintya bhagavān varadānaṃ mahātmanaḥ ||
saṃdhyeyaṃ vartate raudrā na rātrir divasaṃ na ca ||
vṛtraś cāvaśyavadhyo 'yaṃ mama sarvaharo ripuḥ ||
yadi vṛtraṃ na hanmy adya vañcayitvā mahāsuram ||
mahābalaṃ mahākāyaṃ na me śreyo bhaviṣyati ||

And the chief of the deities spent his time seeking out an opening, troubled in mind. And one day, when it was evening, that terrible hour, Indra saw on the shore of the sea the mighty Asura. And he recalled the boon that had been granted to the illustrious Asura, saying: 'This is the terrible evening hour; it is neither day nor night; and this Vritra, my enemy, who has deprived me of everything, must without doubt be killed by me. If I do not slay Vritra, this great and mighty Asura of gigantic frame, even by deceit, it will not go well for me.' And as Indra pondered all this, thinking of Vishnu, he saw at that moment in the sea a mass of foam the size of a hill. And he said: 'This is neither dry nor wet, and it is no weapon; let me hurl it at Vritra.
