Desiring to become the greatest of the gods, he led an ascetic life such as a holy brahmana leads. Indra renounced pleasures and all that is agreeable to the heart. He assiduously cherished virtue and truth, and restraint, and forbearance, and impartiality, and humanity. It was by work that he attained the highest position of all. Following this manner of life, Indra attained high dominion over the gods. Brihaspati, with concentration and self-mastery, duly led that life of austerity which a brahmana leads. He renounced pleasures and curbed his senses, and thereby attained the position of preceptor of the gods. In the same way, the constellations in the other world shine through work, and likewise the Rudras, the Adityas, the Vasus, King Yama, and Kubera, as well as the gandharvas, yakshas, and celestial nymphs -- all attained their present station through work. In the other world the holy ones shine, having led a life of study, austerity, and labor combined. Knowing, O Sanjaya, that the best of the brahmanas, the kshatriyas, and the vaishyas follow this rule, and that you yourself are among the wisest of men, why do you undertake this effort on behalf of these sons of Kuru?

This fragment (5.29.11-15) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key themes: Sanjaya, dharma. Here dharma is revealed through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
