कृष्णसंमाननार्थं च नगरं समलंकृतम् ॥
बभूवू राजमार्गाश् च बहुरत्नसमाचिताः ॥
न स्म कश् चिद् गृहे राजंस् तद् आसीद् भरतर्षभ ॥
न स्त्री न वृद्धो न शिशुर् वासुदेवदिदृक्षया ॥
राजमार्गे नरा न स्म संभवन्त्य् अवनिं गताः ॥
तथा हि सुमहद् राजन् हृषीकेशप्रवेशने ॥
आवृतानि वरस्त्रीभिर् गृहाणि सुमहान्त्य् अपि ॥
प्रचलन्तीव भारेण दृश्यन्ते स्म महीतले ॥
तथा च गतिमन्तस् ते वासुदेवस्य वाजिनः ॥
प्रनष्टगतयो ऽभूवन् राजमार्गे नरैर् वृते ॥
kṛṣṇasaṃmānanārthaṃ ca nagaraṃ samalaṃkṛtam ||
babhūvū rājamārgāś ca bahuratnasamācitāḥ ||
na sma kaś cid gṛhe rājaṃs tad āsīd bharatarṣabha ||
na strī na vṛddho na śiśur vāsudevadidṛkṣayā ||
rājamārge narā na sma saṃbhavanty avaniṃ gatāḥ ||
tathā hi sumahad rājan hṛṣīkeśapraveśane ||
āvṛtāni varastrībhir gṛhāṇi sumahānty api ||
pracalantīva bhāreṇa dṛśyante sma mahītale ||
tathā ca gatimantas te vāsudevasya vājinaḥ ||
pranaṣṭagatayo 'bhūvan rājamārge narair vṛte ||
O king, everyone is blessed with honor and happiness through your many virtues. Therefore strive, together with your friends and kinsmen, to preserve these virtues of yours. Embrace sincerity in your conduct. Do not, out of folly, bring about the wholesale destruction of your sons, grandsons, friends, kinsmen, and everything dear to you. You wish to give a great deal, O king, to Keshava as your guest. Know, however, that Keshava deserves all of this and much more — indeed, the whole earth.

This passage (5.87.6-10) carries forward the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace unfolds even as war draws inevitably near. Krishna is the key figure here. Dharma reveals itself through speech, through the choice of an embassy, through faithfulness to one's word, and through the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
