I swear sincerely upon my own soul that you have no wish to give all this to Krishna, neither out of virtue nor with the intent of pleasing him. O giver of great wealth, all of this betrays nothing but deceit, falsehood, and insincerity. By your outward acts, O king, I know your hidden purpose. The five Pandavas, O king, desire only five villages. Yet you are unwilling to give them even that much. Therefore you have no wish to make peace.

This passage (5.87.11-15) carries forward the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace unfolds even as war draws inevitably near. Key figures here are Dhritarashtra and Bhishma. Dharma reveals itself through speech, through the choice of an embassy, through faithfulness to one's word, and through the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
