तेषु धर्मानुपूर्वीं तां प्रयुज्य मधुसूदनः ॥
यथावयः समीयाय राजभिस् तत्र माधवः ॥
अथ द्रोणं सपुत्रं स बाह्लीकं च यशस्विनम् ॥
कृपं च सोमदत्तं च समीयाय जनार्दनः ॥
तत्रासीद् ऊर्जितं मृष्टं काञ्चनं महद् आसनम् ॥
शासनाद् धृतराष्ट्रस्य तत्रोपाविशद् अच्युतः ॥
अथ गां मधुपर्कं चाप्य् उदकं च जनार्दने ॥
उपजह्रुर् यथान्यायं धृतराष्ट्रपुरोहिताः ॥
कृतातिथ्यस् तु गोविन्दः सर्वान् परिहसन् कुरून् ॥
आस्ते संबन्धकं कुर्वन् कुरुभिः परिवारितः ॥

yathāvayaḥ samīyāya rājabhis tatra mādhavaḥ ||
atha droṇaṃ saputraṃ sa bāhlīkaṃ ca yaśasvinam ||
kṛpaṃ ca somadattaṃ ca samīyāya janārdanaḥ ||
tatrāsīd ūrjitaṃ mṛṣṭaṃ kāñcanaṃ mahad āsanam ||
śāsanād dhṛtarāṣṭrasya tatropāviśad acyutaḥ ||
atha gāṃ madhuparkaṃ cāpy udakaṃ ca janārdane ||
upajahrur yathānyāyaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrapurohitāḥ ||
kṛtātithyas tu govindaḥ sarvān parihasan kurūn ||
āste saṃbandhakaṃ kurvan kurubhiḥ parivāritaḥ ||
You seek to make the mighty-armed hero of the Vrishni race your own possession; thus you seek to separate Keshava from the Pandavas. But I tell you that neither by wealth, nor by attention, nor by worship are you able to separate Krishna from Dhananjaya. I know the generosity of Krishna; I know Arjuna's steadfast devotion to him; I know that Dhananjaya, who is Keshava's very life, is incapable of forsaking him.

This passage (5.87.16-20) carries forward the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace unfolds even as war draws inevitably near. Dhritarashtra is the key figure here. Dharma reveals itself through speech, through the choice of an embassy, through faithfulness to one's word, and through the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
