"Without violating dharma, without deceit, O scorcher of foes, I know your power, O Krishna, in truth and noble birth alike, in steadfastness toward friends, and in wisdom and valor. You alone are dharma in our family, you are truth, you are great austerity; you are the protector, you are the great sacred word -- everything rests upon you. As you have said, so it shall be; through you it will become truth." Having taken leave of her, Govinda, the mighty-armed, circumambulated her reverently and set out toward the house of Duryodhana.

This passage (5.88.101-104) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds against the backdrop of an already inevitable war. Key themes: Krishna, Duryodhana, dharma. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, the choice of embassy, fidelity to promises, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
