शपेयं त्वां न चेद् एवम् आगच्छेथा विशां पते ॥
युध्यस्व त्वं रणे यत्तो धैर्यम् आलम्ब्य कौरव ॥
न तु ते जयम् आशासे त्वां हि जेतुम् अहं स्थितः ॥
गच्छ युध्यस्व धर्मेण प्रीतो ऽस्मि चरितेन ते ॥
भीष्म उवाच
ततो ऽहं तं नमस्कृत्य रथम् आरुह्य सत्वरः ॥
प्राध्मापयं रणे शङ्खं पुनर् हेमविभूषितम् ॥
ततो युद्धं समभवन् मम तस्य च भारत ॥
दिवसान् सुबहून् राजन् परस्परजिगीषया ॥
स मे तस्मिन् रणे पूर्वं प्राहरत् कङ्कपत्रिभिः ॥
षष्ट्या शतैश् च नवभिः शराणाम् अग्निवर्चसाम् ॥

tato yuddhaṃ samabhavan mama tasya ca bhārata ||
divasān subahūn rājan parasparajigīṣayā ||
sa me tasmin raṇe pūrvaṃ prāharat kaṅkapatribhiḥ ||
ṣaṣṭyā śataiś ca navabhiḥ śarāṇām agnivarcasām ||
'I would curse you, O lord of the people, had you not come to me thus. Fight now in the battle, attentive, holding fast to your courage, O Kaurava. Yet I do not wish you victory, for I stand here to conquer you. Go and fight according to dharma; I am pleased with your conduct.' Bhishma said: Then I bowed to him, swiftly mounted my chariot, and once more sounded my gold-adorned conch in battle. After that, O Bharata, a battle arose between him and me that lasted many days, O king, each of us seeking to conquer the other. In that battle he struck me first with heron-feathered arrows, nine hundred and sixty of them, blazing like fire.

This chapter shows that even a duel righteous in form remains spiritually perilous when weapons are raised against a teacher and a brahmin. Bhishma strives to keep the dharma: unwilling to strike an opponent on foot from his chariot, he descends before Rama, bows to him, and asks his blessing. Yet the situation itself is already tragic: Rama, a brahmin by nature, takes on the role of a warrior, and Bhishma is forced to distinguish in him the venerable brahminhood from the martial act against which he fights. When Rama is finally covered in blood, compassion and shame for the warrior's deed awaken in Bhishma. Thus the verse shows the limit of outward rightness: dharma demands action, but the heart must not rejoice in violence even when the battle seems unavoidable.
