ततो ऽहं कृपयाविष्टो विनिन्द्यात्मानम् आत्मना ॥
धिग् धिग् इत्य् अब्रुवं युद्धं क्षत्रं च भरतर्षभ ॥
असकृच् चाब्रुवं राजञ् शोकवेगपरिप्लुतः ॥
अहो बत कृतं पापं मयेदं क्षत्रकर्मणा ॥
गुरुर् द्विजातिर् धर्मात्मा यद् एवं पीडितः शरैः ॥
ततो न प्राहरं भूयो जामदग्न्याय भारत ॥
अथावताप्य पृथिवीं पूषा दिवससंक्षये ॥
जगामास्तं सहस्रांशुस् ततो युद्धम् उपारमत् ॥
tato 'haṃ kṛpayāviṣṭo vinindyātmānam ātmanā ||
dhig dhig ity abruvaṃ yuddhaṃ kṣatraṃ ca bharatarṣabha ||
asakṛc cābruvaṃ rājañ śokavegapariplutaḥ ||
aho bata kṛtaṃ pāpaṃ mayedaṃ kṣatrakarmaṇā ||
gurur dvijātir dharmātmā yad evaṃ pīḍitaḥ śaraiḥ ||
tato na prāharaṃ bhūyo jāmadagnyāya bhārata ||
athāvatāpya pṛthivīṃ pūṣā divasasaṃkṣaye ||
jagāmāstaṃ sahasrāṃśus tato yuddham upāramat ||
Then, overcome with compassion, I began to reproach myself, saying: 'Shame, shame upon war and the warrior class, O best of Bharatas!' Again and again, O king, overwhelmed by a surge of grief, I said: 'Alas, what evil I have committed by this warrior's deed! My teacher, twice-born and righteous in soul, is so afflicted by arrows.' After this, O Bharata, I struck Jamadagnya no more. Then Pushan, the thousand-rayed sun, having scorched the earth, set at the close of day, and the battle ceased.

This chapter shows that even a duel righteous in form remains spiritually perilous when weapons are raised against a teacher and a brahmin. Bhishma strives to observe dharma: he does not wish to strike an opponent on foot while mounted on his chariot, so he descends before Rama, bows to him, and asks for his blessing. Yet the situation itself is already tragic: Rama, a brahmin by nature, takes on the role of a warrior, and Bhishma is forced to distinguish in him the revered brahmin from the martial act he fights against. When Rama is drenched in blood, compassion and shame for the warrior's deed awaken in Bhishma. Thus the verse reveals the limit of outward righteousness: dharma demands action, but the heart must not rejoice in violence even when the fight seems unavoidable.
