संबन्धिना समागम्य हृष्टो वासम् उवास ह ॥
शिखण्डिने च मुदितः प्रादाद् वित्तं जनेश्वरः ॥
हस्तिनो ऽश्वांश् च गाश् चैव दास्यो बहुशतास् तथा ॥
पूजितश् च प्रतिययौ निवर्त्य तनयां किल ॥
विनीतकिल्बिषे प्रीते हेमवर्मणि पार्थिवे ॥
प्रतियाते तु दाशार्णे हृष्टरूपा शिखण्डिनी ॥
कस्य चित् त्व् अथ कालस्य कुबेरो नरवाहनः ॥
लोकानुयात्रां कुर्वाणः स्थूणस्यागान् निवेशनम् ॥

pūjitaś ca pratiyayau nivartya tanayāṃ kila ||
vinītakilbiṣe prīte hemavarmaṇi pārthive ||
pratiyāte tu dāśārṇe hṛṣṭarūpā śikhaṇḍinī ||
kasya cit tv atha kālasya kubero naravāhanaḥ ||
lokānuyātrāṃ kurvāṇaḥ sthūṇasyāgān niveśanam ||
The women who had been sent, having learned the true state of things, joyfully told the king everything: Shikhandin, O lord of the Kauravas, was indeed a great man. Then the king, having received this reliable report, rejoiced. Meeting with his kinsman by marriage, he joyfully stayed with him. The lord of men, well pleased, gave Shikhandin wealth, elephants, horses, cattle, and many hundreds of maidservants. Honored, he departed, it is said, taking his daughter back with him; the offense had been removed, and the earthly lord Hemavarman was content. When the king of Dashārna had gone, Shikhandini was joyful in appearance. After some time, Kubera, who rides upon men, while making his rounds of the worlds, came to Sthuna's dwelling.

This chapter completes the story of Shikhandin: Amba's fate takes effective form through a temporary exchange of sex with the yaksha Sthuna. The yaksha's grace saves Drupada from war and makes Shikhandin a man, but the grace itself has a price: Kubera punishes Sthuna for willfully breaking the order of things. Bhishma has heard all this from his spies, and so sees in Shikhandin not an ordinary warrior but the former Amba, born for his death. His refusal to fight one who was a woman becomes not weakness but the continuation of his own vow and the boundary of dharma that he does not cross even in battle.
