Traducción

Yudhishthira received Bhishma's words with reverence, bowed to him once more, and, before the eyes of all the armies, went together with his brothers through the middle of the forces to Drona's chariot. Having saluted Drona and walked around him respectfully, he spoke to the unassailable teacher a word aimed at his own highest good: "O blessed twice-born one, I ask your leave. With your permission may I fight free of sin and conquer all my enemies." Drona replied: "Had you not come to me, resolved on battle, I would have cursed you to utter defeat. I am satisfied, O Yudhishthira; you have honored me. I give my leave: fight and win victory. Tell me what wish I should grant you; what do you desire besides battle? This is the truth: man is the slave of wealth, but wealth is no one's slave. I am bound by the maintenance of the Kauravas. Therefore I speak to you as a powerless man: I shall fight for the Kaurava's sake, but I wish you victory." Yudhishthira said: "O brahmin, wish me victory and counsel me for my good. Fight for the Kaurava's sake: this boon I have chosen." Drona said: "Your victory is certain, O king, for Hari is your counselor. I know you: in battle you will conquer your enemies. Where dharma is, there is Krishna; where Krishna is, there is victory. Fight, go, O Kaunteya, and ask me what I should tell you." Yudhishthira asked how he might conquer the unconquered teacher. Drona answered: "As long as I fight, you will have no victory; strive together with your brothers to bring about my swift death." Asked to name the means of his own death, Drona said: "I see no enemy who could slay me while I stand in battle, fighting in fury and pouring forth torrents of arrows. But should I enter renunciation, lay down my weapon, and become senseless, then I might be slain. I shall cast aside my weapon in battle if I hear some exceedingly grievous and unwelcome news from a man whose word is trusted. This is the truth I tell you."
