Having heard this from the wise son of Bharadvaja, Yudhishthira honored the teacher and went toward Sharadvata-Kripa. Having saluted Kripa and walked around him respectfully, the king, skilled in speech, said to the most unassailable one: "O teacher, I ask your leave: with your permission may I fight free of sin and conquer all my enemies." Kripa said: "Had you not come to me, resolved on battle, I would have cursed you to utter defeat. This is the truth: man is the slave of wealth, but wealth is no one's slave. I am bound by the maintenance of the Kauravas. For their sake, great king, it is fitting for me to fight. Therefore I speak to you as a powerless man: what do you desire besides battle?" Yudhishthira began to ask, but, troubled, fell silent. Gautama, understanding his intention, said: "O lord of the earth, I cannot be slain. Fight and win victory. Pleased by your coming, I shall rise each day and pray for your victory. This is the truth I tell you."

Kripa does not reveal the means of his own death, but he blesses Yudhishthira. The scene continues the theme: the formal side of war does not cancel a personal recognition of dharma and respect for the righteous king.
