पितामहवचः श्रुत्वा तथा चक्रुः स्म कौरवाः ॥
उपायेनापयानं ते घटोत्कचभयार्दिताः ॥
कौरवेषु निवृत्तेषु पाण्डवा जितकाशिनः ॥
सिंहनादम् अकुर्वन्त शङ्खवेणुस्वनैः सह ॥
एवं तद् अभवद् युद्धं दिवसं भरतर्षभ ॥
पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च पुरस्कृत्य घटोत्कचम् ॥
कौरवास् तु ततो राजन् प्रययुः शिबिरं स्वकम् ॥
व्रीडमाना निशाकाले पाण्डवेयैः पराजिताः ॥
शरविक्षतगात्राश् च पाण्डुपुत्रा महारथाः ॥
युद्धे सुमनसो भूत्वा शिबिरायैव जग्मिरे ॥
पुरस्कृत्य महाराज भीमसेनघटोत्कचौ ॥
पूजयन्तस् तदान्योन्यं मुदा परमया युताः ॥
नदन्तो विविधान् नादांस् तूर्यस्वनविमिश्रितान् ॥
सिंहनादांश् च कुर्वाणा विमिश्राञ् शङ्खनिस्वनैः ॥
विनदन्तो महात्मानः कम्पयन्तश् च मेदिनीम् ॥
घट्टयन्तश् च मर्माणि तव पुत्रस्य मारिष ॥
प्रयाताः शिबिरायैव निशाकाले परंतपाः ॥
दुर्योधनस् तु नृपतिर् दीनो भ्रातृवधेन च ॥
मुहूर्तं चिन्तयाम् आस बाष्पशोकसमाकुलः ॥
ततः कृत्वा विधिं सर्वं शिबिरस्य यथाविधि ॥
प्रदध्यौ शोकसंतप्तो भ्रातृव्यसनकर्शितः ॥

vrīḍamānā niśākāle pāṇḍaveyaiḥ parājitāḥ ||
śaravikṣatagātrāś ca pāṇḍuputrā mahārathāḥ ||
yuddhe sumanaso bhūtvā śibirāyaiva jagmire ||
puraskṛtya mahārāja bhīmasenaghaṭotkacau ||
pūjayantas tadānyonyaṃ mudā paramayā yutāḥ ||
nadanto vividhān nādāṃs tūryasvanavimiśritān ||
siṃhanādāṃś ca kurvāṇā vimiśrāñ śaṅkhanisvanaiḥ ||
vinadanto mahātmānaḥ kampayantaś ca medinīm ||
ghaṭṭayantaś ca marmāṇi tava putrasya māriṣa ||
prayātāḥ śibirāyaiva niśākāle paraṃtapāḥ ||
duryodhanas tu nṛpatir dīno bhrātṛvadhena ca ||
muhūrtaṃ cintayām āsa bāṣpaśokasamākulaḥ ||
tataḥ kṛtvā vidhiṃ sarvaṃ śibirasya yathāvidhi ||
pradadhyau śokasaṃtapto bhrātṛvyasanakarśitaḥ ||
Hearing the word of the forefather, the Kauravas did as he had said: tormented by fear of Ghatotkacha, they found a way to withdraw. When the Kurus had drawn back, the Pandavas, shining with victory, raised a lion's roar to the sound of conches and flutes. Thus, O bull of the Bharatas, the battle of the Pandavas and the Kurus raged the whole day, with Ghatotkacha standing in the forefront. The Kauravas, defeated by the Pandavas, went ashamed to their own camp by night, O king. And the sons of Pandu, the great chariot-warriors, their bodies gashed by arrows, marched to their camp after the battle in good spirits, placing Bhimasena and Ghatotkacha at their head, O great king. Filled with the highest joy, they praised one another, raising many kinds of cries mingled with the sound of war-instruments, and lion's roars mingled with the blasts of conches. The great-souled ones, shouting aloud in triumph and making the earth tremble, struck at the very heart of your son, O venerable one, and set out for their camp by night, O scorchers of foes. But King Duryodhana, grieved by the slaughter of his brothers, pondered for a while, overcome by tears and sorrow. Then, having ordered all the affairs of the camp as was proper, he sank into thought, consumed by grief and wasted by the calamity that had befallen his brothers.

The day closes on a stark psychological turn: the Pandavas depart in joy, the Kurus in shame, and Duryodhana is shown for the first time not merely as malicious but as broken by the loss of his brothers. Yet his grief comes only after he himself, again and again, cast them into the fire of his own resolve.
