संजय उवाच
स्वसैन्यं निहतं दृष्ट्वा राजा दुर्योधनः स्वयम् ॥
अभ्यधावत संक्रुद्धो भीमसेनम् अरिंदमम् ॥
प्रगृह्य सुमहच् चापम् इन्द्राशनिसमस्वनम् ॥
महता शरवर्षेण पाण्डवं समवाकिरत् ॥
अर्धचन्द्रं च संधाय सुतीक्ष्णं लोमवाहिनम् ॥
भीमसेनस्य चिच्छेद चापं क्रोधसमन्वितः ॥
तदन्तरं च संप्रेक्ष्य त्वरमाणो महारथः ॥
संदधे निशितं बाणं गिरीणाम् अपि दारणम् ॥
तेनोरसि महाबाहुर् भीमसेनम् अताडयत् ॥
स गाढविद्धो व्यथितः सृक्किणी परिसंलिहन् ॥
समाललम्बे तेजस्वी ध्वजं हेमपरिष्कृतम् ॥
तथा विमनसं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनं घटोत्कचः ॥
क्रोधेनाभिप्रजज्वाल दिधक्षन्न् इव पावकः ॥
अभिमन्युमुखाश् चैव पाण्डवानां महारथाः ॥
समभ्यधावन् क्रोशन्तो राजानं जातसंभ्रमाः ॥
संप्रेक्ष्य तान् आपततः संक्रुद्धाञ् जातसंभ्रमान् ॥
भारद्वाजो ऽब्रवीद् वाक्यं तावकानां महारथान् ॥
क्षिप्रं गच्छत भद्रं वो राजानं परिरक्षत ॥
संशयं परमं प्राप्तं मज्जन्तं व्यसनार्णवे ॥
एते क्रुद्धा महेष्वासाः पाण्डवानां महारथाः ॥
भीमसेनं पुरस्कृत्य दुर्योधनम् उपद्रुताः ॥
नानाविधानि शस्त्राणि विसृजन्तो जये रताः ॥
नदन्तो भैरवान् नादांस् त्रासयन्तश् च भूम् इमाम् ॥
तद् आचार्यवचः श्रुत्वा सोमदत्तपुरोगमाः ॥
तावकाः समवर्तन्त पाण्डवानाम् अनीकिनीम् ॥
कृपो भूरिश्रवाः शल्यो द्रोणपुत्रो विविंशतिः ॥
चित्रसेनो विकर्णश् च सैन्धवो ऽथ बृहद्बलः ॥
आवन्त्यौ च महेष्वासौ कौरवं पर्यवारयन् ॥
ते विंशतिपदं गत्वा संप्रहारं प्रचक्रिरे ॥
पाण्डवा धार्तराष्ट्राश् च परस्परजिघांसवः ॥

bhīmasenasya ciccheda cāpaṃ krodhasamanvitaḥ ||
tadantaraṃ ca saṃprekṣya tvaramāṇo mahārathaḥ ||
saṃdadhe niśitaṃ bāṇaṃ girīṇām api dāraṇam ||
tenorasi mahābāhur bhīmasenam atāḍayat ||
sa gāḍhaviddho vyathitaḥ sṛkkiṇī parisaṃlihan ||
samālalambe tejasvī dhvajaṃ hemapariṣkṛtam ||
tathā vimanasaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenaṃ ghaṭotkacaḥ ||
krodhenābhiprajajvāla didhakṣann iva pāvakaḥ ||
abhimanyumukhāś caiva pāṇḍavānāṃ mahārathāḥ ||
samabhyadhāvan krośanto rājānaṃ jātasaṃbhramāḥ ||
saṃprekṣya tān āpatataḥ saṃkruddhāñ jātasaṃbhramān ||
bhāradvājo 'bravīd vākyaṃ tāvakānāṃ mahārathān ||
kṣipraṃ gacchata bhadraṃ vo rājānaṃ parirakṣata ||
saṃśayaṃ paramaṃ prāptaṃ majjantaṃ vyasanārṇave ||
ete kruddhā maheṣvāsāḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahārathāḥ ||
bhīmasenaṃ puraskṛtya duryodhanam upadrutāḥ ||
nānāvidhāni śastrāṇi visṛjanto jaye ratāḥ ||
nadanto bhairavān nādāṃs trāsayantaś ca bhūm imām ||
tad ācāryavacaḥ śrutvā somadattapurogamāḥ ||
tāvakāḥ samavartanta pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm ||
kṛpo bhūriśravāḥ śalyo droṇaputro viviṃśatiḥ ||
citraseno vikarṇaś ca saindhavo 'tha bṛhadbalaḥ ||
āvantyau ca maheṣvāsau kauravaṃ paryavārayan ||
te viṃśatipadaṃ gatvā saṃprahāraṃ pracakrire ||
pāṇḍavā dhārtarāṣṭrāś ca parasparajighāṃsavaḥ ||
Sanjaya said: 'Seeing his own army destroyed, King Duryodhana himself, in fury, rushed at Bhimasena, tamer of foes. Seizing a mighty bow that roared like Indra's thunderbolt, he covered the son of Pandu with a great shower of arrows. Then, fitting a very sharp, feathered, crescent-headed arrow, he cut Bhimasena's bow in his rage. Noticing this opening, the swift maharatha fitted a whetted arrow capable of splitting even mountains, and with it struck mighty Bhimasena in the chest. Grievously wounded and in pain, radiant Bhima, licking the corners of his mouth, clung to his gold-adorned banner. Seeing Bhimasena in this state, Ghatotkacha blazed with anger, like fire eager to consume. The maharathas of the Pandavas, led by Abhimanyu, agitated, rushed toward the king with cries. Seeing them advancing, enraged and agitated, Bharadvaja-Drona said to the maharathas of your side: "Go quickly, may fortune be with you—protect the king, who has fallen into extreme peril and is sinking in an ocean of misfortune. These enraged great bowmen of the Pandavas, with Bhimasena at their head, have rushed at Duryodhana, loosing various weapons, intent on victory, roaring with terrible cries and striking fear into this earth."
