संजय उवाच
अभिमन्युर् महाराज तव पुत्रम् अयोधयत् ॥
महत्या सेनया युक्तो भीष्महेतोः पराक्रमी ॥
दुर्योधनो रणे कार्ष्णिं नवभिर् नतपर्वभिः ॥
आजघान रणे क्रुद्धः पुनश् चैनं त्रिभिः शरैः ॥
तस्य शक्तिं रणे कार्ष्णिर् मृत्योर् घोराम् इव स्वसाम् ॥
प्रेषयाम् आस संक्रुद्धो दुर्योधनरथं प्रति ॥
ताम् आपतन्तीं सहसा घोररूपां विशां पते ॥
द्विधा चिच्छेद ते पुत्रः क्षुरप्रेण महारथः ॥
तां शक्तिं पतितां दृष्ट्वा कार्ष्णिः परमकोपनः ॥
दुर्योधनं त्रिभिर् बाणैर् बाह्वोर् उरसि चार्पयत् ॥
पुनश् चैनं शरैर् घोरैर् आजघान स्तनान्तरे ॥
दशभिर् भरतश्रेष्ठ दुर्योधनम् अमर्षणम् ॥
तद् युद्धम् अभवद् घोरं चित्ररूपं च भारत ॥
ईक्षितृप्रीतिजननं सर्वपार्थिवपूजितम् ॥
भीष्मस्य निधनार्थाय पार्थस्य विजयाय च ॥
युयुधाते रणे वीरौ सौभद्रकुरुपुंगवौ ॥

abhimanyur mahārāja tava putram ayodhayat ||
mahatyā senayā yukto bhīṣmahetoḥ parākramī ||
duryodhano raṇe kārṣṇiṃ navabhir nataparvabhiḥ ||
ājaghāna raṇe kruddhaḥ punaś cainaṃ tribhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
tasya śaktiṃ raṇe kārṣṇir mṛtyor ghorām iva svasām ||
preṣayām āsa saṃkruddho duryodhanarathaṃ prati ||
tām āpatantīṃ sahasā ghorarūpāṃ viśāṃ pate ||
dvidhā ciccheda te putraḥ kṣurapreṇa mahārathaḥ ||
tāṃ śaktiṃ patitāṃ dṛṣṭvā kārṣṇiḥ paramakopanaḥ ||
duryodhanaṃ tribhir bāṇair bāhvor urasi cārpayat ||
punaś cainaṃ śarair ghorair ājaghāna stanāntare ||
daśabhir bharataśreṣṭha duryodhanam amarṣaṇam ||
tad yuddham abhavad ghoraṃ citrarūpaṃ ca bhārata ||
īkṣitṛprītijananaṃ sarvapārthivapūjitam ||
bhīṣmasya nidhanārthāya pārthasya vijayāya ca ||
yuyudhāte raṇe vīrau saubhadrakurupuṃgavau ||
Sanjaya said: "O great king, valiant Abhimanyu, supported by a great army, fought with your son for Bhishma's sake. Duryodhana, growing enraged in battle, struck Karshni with nine curved arrows, and then with three more. Then Karshni, in fury, hurled his shakti at Duryodhana's chariot, dreadful as the sister of death. But your son, the great charioteer, cut this terrible spear in two with a razor arrow as it swooped down upon him. Seeing his shakti fallen, Abhimanyu, seized by great wrath, struck Duryodhana with three arrows in the arms and chest. Then he struck the wrathful Duryodhana again with dreadful arrows in the chest, O best of the Bharatas, with ten arrows. Their battle was terrible and wondrous to behold, O Bharata; it delighted the onlookers and was honored by all kings. For the sake of Bhishma's death and Partha's victory, the two heroes, Saubhadra and the bull of Kuru, fought in that battle."

The chapter opens not with the central clash of Arjuna and Bhishma but with Abhimanyu's duel against Duryodhana. On the tenth day even the separate duels are drawn toward a single center: everything unfolds for the sake of Bhishma's fall and Partha's victory.
