Shikhandin, having come upon Bhishma in battle, O bull of the Bharatas, struck him with tens of arrows in the great fight. The son of Ganga looked at Shikhandin with a sidelong glance blazing with wrath, as though burning him, O Bharata. But remembering Shikhandin's former womanhood, Bhishma, before the eyes of the whole world, did not strike him in battle, and Shikhandin did not understand why. Then Arjuna, O great king, said to Shikhandin: 'Make haste, be quick! Slay this grandsire. What use is there in talking, hero? Slay Bhishma, the maharatha. I see no one else in Yudhishthira's army able to do battle with the grandsire except you, O tiger among men; this I tell you in truth.' Thus urged on by Partha, Shikhandin, O bull of the Bharatas, swiftly rushed upon the grandsire with arrows of many kinds. But your ancestor Devavrata, heedless of those arrows, set about checking the wrathful Arjuna in battle with his own shafts. Likewise this maharatha sent the whole army of the Pandavas to the next world with sharp arrows, O worthy one. The Pandavas, surrounded by a great host, covered Bhishma as clouds cover the sun. And Bhishma, descendant of Bharata, hemmed in on every side, burned the heroes in battle as a blazing fire burns a forest.

Bhishma's decisive paradox is laid bare here: he can burn whole armies, yet he will not raise his weapon against Shikhandin. Arjuna understands this and presses Shikhandin to act, for victory now hinges on the moral boundary Bhishma himself will not cross.
