संक्षोभ्यमाणा द्रोणेन भिद्यमाना महाचमूः ॥
व्यशीर्यत सपाञ्चाला वातेनेव बलाहकाः ॥
बहूनीह विकुर्वाणो दिव्यान्य् अस्त्राणि संयुगे ॥
अपीडयत् क्षणेनैव द्रोणः पाण्डवसृञ्जयान् ॥
ते वध्यमाना द्रोणेन वासवेनेव दानवाः ॥
पाञ्चालाः समकम्पन्त धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाः ॥
ततो दिव्यास्त्रविच् छूरो याज्ञसेनिर् महारथः ॥
अभिनच् छरवर्षेण द्रोणानीकम् अनेकधा ॥

vyaśīryata sapāñcālā vāteneva balāhakāḥ ||
bahūnīha vikurvāṇo divyāny astrāṇi saṃyuge ||
apīḍayat kṣaṇenaiva droṇaḥ pāṇḍavasṛñjayān ||
te vadhyamānā droṇena vāsaveneva dānavāḥ ||
pāñcālāḥ samakampanta dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamāḥ ||
tato divyāstravic chūro yājñasenir mahārathaḥ ||
abhinac charavarṣeṇa droṇānīkam anekadhā ||
Shaken by Drona, breached by him, the great army together with the Panchalas scattered like storm-clouds before the wind. Employing many divine weapons in the battle, Drona instantly harried the Pandavas and Srinjayas. Slaughtered by Drona as the danavas were by Vasava [Indra], the Panchalas, led by Dhrishtadyumna, wavered. Then the hero versed in divine weapons, the son of Yajnasena [Dhrishtadyumna], the great chariot-warrior, broke through Drona's army in many places with a shower of arrows.

Drona scatters the army "like wind scatters clouds" -- and rising to meet him stands Dhrishtadyumna, born of the sacrificial fire for the very purpose of his death. Thus in the very thick of battle the hand of fate shows itself: the teacher triumphs now, but already arrayed against him stands the one destined to slay him. It is telling that the Kauravas here are likened to Indra and the Panchalas to danavas: the narrative's language again seems to invert the truth, for victory by force is temporary, while the verdict of dharma is final. The verse teaches that a momentary triumph in a wrongful cause does not cancel its foreordained outcome; that against every doer of evil, fate has already raised up its instrument; and that the brilliance of the one who conquers today is only a reprieve before the meeting with the one sent against him.
