द्रोणस्य शरवर्षैस् तु शरवर्षाणि भागशः ॥
संनिवार्य ततः सेनां कुरून् अप्य् अवधीद् बली ॥
संहृत्य तु ततो द्रोणः समवस्थाप्य चाहवे ॥
स्वम् अनीकं महाबाहुः पार्षतं समुपाद्रवत् ॥
स बाणवर्षं सुमहद् असृजत् पार्षतं प्रति ॥
मघवान् समभिक्रुद्धः सहसा दानवेष्व् इव ॥
ते कम्प्यमाना द्रोणेन बाणैः पाण्डवसृञ्जयाः ॥
पुनः पुनर् अभज्यन्त सिंहेनेवेतरे मृगाः ॥
अथ पर्यपतद् द्रोणः पाण्डवानां बलं बली ॥
अलातचक्रवद् राजंस् तद् अद्भुतम् इवाभवत् ॥
खचरनगरकल्पं कल्पितं शास्त्रदृष्ट्या; चलदनिलपताकं ह्रादिनं वल्गिताश्वम् ॥
स्फटिकविमलकेतुं तापनं शात्रवाणां; रथवरम् अधिरूढः संजहारारिसेनाम् ॥

saṃnivārya tataḥ senāṃ kurūn apy avadhīd balī ||
saṃhṛtya tu tato droṇaḥ samavasthāpya cāhave ||
svam anīkaṃ mahābāhuḥ pārṣataṃ samupādravat ||
sa bāṇavarṣaṃ sumahad asṛjat pārṣataṃ prati ||
maghavān samabhikruddhaḥ sahasā dānaveṣv iva ||
te kampyamānā droṇena bāṇaiḥ pāṇḍavasṛñjayāḥ ||
punaḥ punar abhajyanta siṃhenevetare mṛgāḥ ||
atha paryapatad droṇaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ balaṃ balī ||
alātacakravad rājaṃs tad adbhutam ivābhavat ||
khacaranagarakalpaṃ kalpitaṃ śāstradṛṣṭyā; caladanilapatākaṃ hrādinaṃ valgitāśvam ||
sphaṭikavimalaketuṃ tāpanaṃ śātravāṇāṃ; rathavaram adhirūḍhaḥ saṃjahārārisenām ||
The mighty [Dhrishtadyumna], repelling Drona's showers of arrows one by one with his own showers of arrows, then struck at the Kuru host as well. Then Drona, the mighty-armed, having gathered and reformed his army in the battle, fell upon Parshata [Dhrishtadyumna]. He unleashed an immense stream of arrows upon Parshata, like Maghavan [Indra] inflamed with fury against the danavas. Shaken by Drona's arrows, the Pandavas and Srinjayas were scattered again and again, like lesser beasts before a lion. Then the mighty Drona swooped upon the army of the Pandavas, circling like a whirled firebrand, O king -- and it was as though a marvel. Mounted upon his most excellent chariot -- fashioned according to the precepts of the shastras, resembling a city floating in the sky, with banners fluttering in the wind, thundering, with prancing horses, with a banner clear as crystal, scorching his enemies -- he crushed the enemy host.

Drona appears in all his terrible grandeur -- circling like a whirled firebrand, upon a chariot resembling a celestial city: the teacher in battle is terrible as an elemental force. But the image of the "whirled firebrand" (alata-cakra) runs deep: the ring of fire traced by a burning brand is only the appearance of a wheel, a phantom that vanishes the moment the hand stops -- so too Drona's fearsome triumph is brilliant, yet illusory and fleeting. His chariot "scorches his enemies," even as he himself is borne by duty toward his own destruction. The verse teaches that even the greatest power, displayed in a wrongful cause, is only a phantom of fire and not a true wheel of victory; that the brilliance of the destroyer dazzles but does not endure; and that the fearsome circle traced in darkness will fade the instant the strength of the hand tracing it runs out.
