तेनार्दिता महाराज रथिनः सादिनस् तथा ॥
निपेतुर् उर्व्यां सहसा वातनुन्ना इव द्रुमाः ॥
हयौघांश् च रथौघांश् च गजौघांश् च समन्ततः ॥
अपातयद् रणे राजञ् शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥
दृष्ट्वा तम् एवं समरे विचरन्तम् अभीतवत् ॥
सहिताः सर्वराजानः परिवव्रुः समन्ततः ॥
tenārditā mahārāja rathinaḥ sādinas tathā ||
nipetur urvyāṃ sahasā vātanunnā iva drumāḥ ||
hayaughāṃś ca rathaughāṃś ca gajaughāṃś ca samantataḥ ||
apātayad raṇe rājañ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ||
dṛṣṭvā tam evaṃ samare vicarantam abhītavat ||
sahitāḥ sarvarājānaḥ parivavruḥ samantataḥ ||
Struck down by him, O great king, chariot-warriors and horsemen suddenly fell to the ground, like trees felled by a whirlwind. Hosts of horses, chariots, and elephants he cast down everywhere in battle, O king, by the hundreds and thousands. Seeing him rushing about the battle so fearlessly, all the kings together encircled him from every side.

The fearlessness of one man again calls forth the joint assault of many: the formidable foe is met together, and in that very act his strength is acknowledged. Yet even here the tale remains impassive: the youth who fells armies 'like a whirlwind fells trees' is valiant — yet serves a cause that will destroy him too. The image of trees felled by a storm shows how fragile flesh is before might. The verse teaches that one who cannot be overcome alone is met by many together; that valor shown in an unrighteous cause draws upon the hero the united strength of truth; and that even a mortal's greatest onslaught is but a storm that fells trees yet is not eternal — after its gust, calm is inevitable.
