तद् बलं सुमहद् दीर्णं त्वदीयं प्रेक्ष्य वीर्यवान् ॥
दधारैको रणे पाण्डून् वृषसेनो ऽस्त्रमायया ॥
शरा दश दिशो मुक्ता वृषसेनेन मारिष ॥
विचेरुस् ते विनिर्भिद्य नरवाजिरथद्विपान् ॥
तस्य दीप्ता महाबाणा विनिश्चेरुः सहस्रशः ॥
भानोर् इव महाबाहो ग्रीष्मकाले मरीचयः ॥

tad balaṃ sumahad dīrṇaṃ tvadīyaṃ prekṣya vīryavān ||
dadhāraiko raṇe pāṇḍūn vṛṣaseno 'stramāyayā ||
śarā daśa diśo muktā vṛṣasenena māriṣa ||
vicerus te vinirbhidya naravājirathadvipān ||
tasya dīptā mahābāṇā viniśceruḥ sahasraśaḥ ||
bhānor iva mahābāho grīṣmakāle marīcayaḥ ||
Seeing that great army of yours thrown into disorder, the valiant Vrishasena, son of Karna, alone held back the Pandavas in battle by the art of magical weaponry. The arrows loosed by Vrishasena in all ten directions, O worthy one, ranged about, piercing men, horses, chariots, and elephants. His blazing, mighty arrows shot forth by the thousands, like the rays of the sun in the summer heat, O mighty-armed one.

Young Vrishasena alone holds back an entire army — in Karna's son, the father's valor shows itself: worth is inherited even in the camp of untruth. The comparison of his arrows to the scorching rays of the summer sun reveals a might that is fearsome, yet also burns without discrimination. It is telling that here too a single warrior stands, for a moment, in place of an army — the tale shows again and again that armies are held together by the few. The verse teaches that valor can flourish even in an unrighteous camp without justifying its cause; that a might like the summer heat is fearsome, yet parches rather than nourishes; and that reliance on a single hero, however renowned, is the same instability, only under a new name.
