तान् पाण्डवाः प्रत्यगृह्णंस् त्वरिताः पुत्रगृद्धिनः ॥
पाञ्चालाः केकया मत्स्याः सृञ्जयाश् चोद्यतायुधाः ॥
तद् युद्धम् अभवद् घोरं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् ॥
त्वदीयैः पाण्डुपुत्राणां देवानाम् इव दानवैः ॥
एवम् उत्तमसंरम्भा युयुधुः कुरुपाण्डवाः ॥
परस्परम् उदीक्षन्तः परस्परकृतागसः ॥
तेषां ददृशिरे कोपाद् वपूंष्य् अमिततेजसाम् ॥
युयुत्सूनाम् इवाकाशे पतत्रिवरभोगिनाम् ॥

teṣāṃ dadṛśire kopād vapūṃṣy amitatejasām ||
yuyutsūnām ivākāśe patatrivarabhoginām ||
The Pandavas at once repelled them [the Kauravas], solicitous for their sons — the Panchalas, Kekayas, Matsyas, and Srinjayas, with blades upraised. And that battle became dreadful, wild, and terrifying — between your warriors and the sons of Pandu, as between the gods and the Danavas. Thus in extreme frenzy the Kurus and Pandavas fought, surveying one another, both mutually guilty of offenses. The countenances of those heroes of boundless ardor appeared, in their fury, like the countenances of giant eagles and serpents yearning for battle in the heavens.

It is significant that the text says 'mutually guilty of offenses' (parasparakṛtāgasaḥ): the tale does not make one side wholly innocent — in a long feud, mutual grievances accumulate. But an equality of grievances is not an equality of righteousness: the origin of the enmity lies in the wrong of the Kauravas, and though offenses multiplied on both sides, dharma stands with the Pandavas. The comparison to eagles and serpents (eternal enemies) reveals the irreconcilability of the enmity. The verse teaches that in a long feud grievances multiply on both sides, yet the first cause remains one; that mutual grievances do not equalize right with wrong; and that enmity carried to frenzy turns the faces of men into the faces of warring elemental forces.
