But the young prince, in fury, struck Drona in the chest with an arrow amid the mighty combat, roaring like a lion again and again. Yet Drona, mighty, deft-handed, and unwearied, having checked the young prince in battle with thousands of arrows, crushed that hero — faithful to a noble vow, who had applied himself to the science of combat, guardian of the wheel — this most excellent brahmin. Having penetrated into the midst of the army, traversing every quarter, Bharadvaja [Drona], chief of the rathins, was the bulwark of your host.

The young guardian of the wheel, 'faithful to a noble vow and one who had labored over the science of combat,' perishes at Drona's hand: the flower of valor is cut down at the very outset. The tale notes his virtues with sorrow — his vow, his labor, his courage — in order to mourn the one who has passed. Drona, who slew him, 'was the bulwark of the army': the very same might that destroys the young sustains the host of the unrighteous. The verse teaches that war devours first of all the best and the young, scarcely come into bloom; that valor given over to an unrighteous bulwark turns into the destroyer of the worthy; and that the tale, in recalling the vow and labor of the fallen youth, reminds us that every young life cut down is an irreplaceable loss, not an anonymous number.
