अतीव हृष्टाः श्वसृगालवायसा; बडाः सुपर्णाश् च वृकास् तरक्षवः ॥
वयांस्य् असृक्पान्य् अथ रक्षसां गणाः; पिशाचसंघाश् च सुदारुणा रणे ॥
त्वचो विनिर्भिद्य पिबन् वसाम् असृक्; तथैव मज्जां पिशितानि चाश्नुवन् ॥
वपां विलुम्पन्ति हसन्ति गान्ति च; प्रकर्षमाणाः कुणपान्य् अनेकशः ॥
शरीरसंघाटवहा असृग्जला; रथोडुपा कुञ्जरशैलसंकटा ॥
मनुष्यशीर्षोपलमांसकर्दमा; प्रविद्धनानाविधशस्त्रमालिनी ॥

Utterly rejoicing, dogs, jackals and crows, herons and vultures, wolves and hyenas, blood-drinking birds, and also throngs of rakshasas and most fell packs of pishachas on the battlefield — rending the hide, they drink the fat and blood, devour the marrow and flesh, tear at the inward fat, laugh and sing, dragging off bodies beyond count. Hauling masses of bodies, its water blood, its boats chariots, clogged with elephants like crags, its pebbles human heads and its mire flesh, wreathed with strewn weapons of every kind…

The feast of scavengers and creatures of the night is no ornament to the horror but its unveiling: that for which rivers of blood were spilled falls to jackals and pishachas who "laugh and sing." The image of a river whose "water is blood, whose boats are chariots, whose pebbles are heads" turns the field into an infernal stream. It is telling that only the non-human and the beasts rejoice here: only what feeds on decay delights in the outcome of fratricide. Here the verse teaches that the fruits of a lawless slaughter are reaped not by the victor but by death itself, in the guise of its servants.
