प्रहर्षं पाण्डवेयानां श्रुत्वा मम महद् भयम् ॥
सीदन्तीव च मे ऽङ्गानि मुमूर्षोर् इव पार्थिवाः ॥
वधो नूनं प्रतिज्ञातो मम गाण्डीवधन्वना ॥
तथा हि हृष्टाः क्रोशन्ति शोककाले ऽपि पाण्डवाः ॥

"On hearing the jubilation of the Pandavas, great is my fear, and my limbs sink like a dying man's, O sovereigns. Surely my doom is sworn to me by the wielder of the Gandiva — for thus joyfully do the Pandavas cry out even in the hour of grief."

Jayadratha correctly divines the cause of the impossible — the rejoicing of mourners: "śokakāle api hṛṣṭāḥ", "rejoicing even in the hour of grief", since vengeance has been promised to the father. "Vadho nūnaṃ pratijñātaḥ", "surely my doom is sworn" — he senses Arjuna's vow before ever hearing its words. It is telling that fear grants him a foresight that ease would never have given: he is the first of all to grasp that he is doomed. The verse teaches that a guilty conscience is quick to guess: he who knows his own fault is the first to read his sentence in another's joy.
