हरिणा चन्दनेनाङ्गम् अनुलिप्य महाभुजः ॥
स्रग्वी चाक्लिष्टवसनः प्राङ्मुखः प्राञ्जलिः स्थितः ॥
जजाप जप्यं कौन्तेयः सतां मार्गम् अनुष्ठितः ॥
ततो ऽग्निशरणं दीप्तं प्रविवेश विनीतवत् ॥
समिद्धं स पवित्राभिर् अग्निम् आहुतिभिस् तथा ॥
मन्त्रपूताभिर् अर्चित्वा निश्चक्राम गृहात् ततः ॥
hariṇā candanenāṅgam anulipya mahābhujaḥ ||
sragvī cākliṣṭavasanaḥ prāṅmukhaḥ prāñjaliḥ sthitaḥ ||
jajāpa japyaṃ kaunteyaḥ satāṃ mārgam anuṣṭhitaḥ ||
tato 'gniśaraṇaṃ dīptaṃ praviveśa vinītavat ||
samiddhaṃ sa pavitrābhir agnim āhutibhis tathā ||
mantrapūtābhir arcitvā niścakrāma gṛhāt tataḥ ||
Having anointed his body with yellow sandalwood, the mighty-armed, garlanded and in unsoiled garments, stood facing east with joined palms. The son of Kunti, following the path of the righteous, performed the prayer; then he entered humbly into the blazing chamber of fire. Having worshipped the kindled fire with pure oblations consecrated with mantras, he then went out from the house.

The heart of the morning rite is prayer and worship of fire: "jajāpa japyaṃ… satāṃ mārgam anuṣṭhitaḥ", he performed the prayer, following the path of the righteous. Telling is "vinītavat", "humbly": the king approaches the fire not as a sovereign but as a humble worshipper. The fire is honored "mantrapūtābhiḥ āhutibhiḥ", with oblations consecrated by mantra. The verse teaches that righteousness is upheld by faithfulness to the "path of the good" — the order of reverence established by the saints; and that greatness of rank does not remove humility before the sacred: even a king stands before fire as a humble servant.
