तं निहत्य रणे हृष्टो बृहत्क्षत्रो महारथः ॥
सहसाभ्यपतत् सैन्यं तावकं पार्थकारणात् ॥
धृष्टकेतुम् अथायान्तं द्रोणहेतोः पराक्रमी ॥
वीरधन्वा महेष्वासो वारयाम् आस भारत ॥
तौ परस्परम् आसाद्य शरदंष्ट्रौ तरस्विनौ ॥
शरैर् अनेकसाहस्रैर् अन्योन्यम् अभिजघ्नतुः ॥
taṃ nihatya raṇe hṛṣṭo bṛhatkṣatro mahārathaḥ ||
sahasābhyapatat sainyaṃ tāvakaṃ pārthakāraṇāt ||
dhṛṣṭaketum athāyāntaṃ droṇahetoḥ parākramī ||
vīradhanvā maheṣvāso vārayām āsa bhārata ||
tau parasparam āsādya śaradaṃṣṭrau tarasvinau ||
śarair anekasāhasrair anyonyam abhijaghnatuḥ ||
Having slain him in battle, Brihatkshatra, the great warrior, delighted, suddenly fell upon your army for the sake of the Parthas' cause. Then the valiant Viradhanvan, the great archer, checked Dhrishtaketu, O Bharata, as he advanced for Drona's sake. The two, meeting each other, swift, with arrow-fangs, struck one another with many thousands of arrows.

"Śaradaṃṣṭrau" -- with arrows for fangs: the warriors are likened to beasts of prey, for war turns men into the semblance of animals whose fangs are arrows. It is telling that no sooner does one foe fall than another rises -- the tide of enmity does not ebb. The verse teaches that war is a self-renewing circle: in place of the fallen a new one stands, and the beastly fury awakened in man does not quiet of itself but demands ever fresh victims.
