कुमारे निहते तस्मिन् मगधस्य सुते प्रभो ॥
मागधाः सर्वतो यत्ता युयुधानम् उपाद्रवन् ॥
विसृजन्तः शरांश् चैव तोमरांश् च सहस्रशः ॥
भिण्डिपालांस् तथा प्रासान् मुद्गरान् मुसलान् अपि ॥
अयोधयन् रणे शूराः सात्वतं युद्धदुर्मदम् ॥
तांस् तु सर्वान् स बलवान् सात्यक्तिर् युद्धदुर्मदः ॥
नातिकृच्छ्राद् धसन्न् एव विजिग्ये पुरुषर्षभ ॥
मागधान् द्रवतो दृष्ट्वा हतशेषान् समन्ततः ॥
बलं ते ऽभज्यत विभो युयुधानशरार्दितम् ॥

māgadhāḥ sarvato yattā yuyudhānam upādravan ||
visṛjantaḥ śarāṃś caiva tomarāṃś ca sahasraśaḥ ||
bhiṇḍipālāṃs tathā prāsān mudgarān musalān api ||
ayodhayan raṇe śūrāḥ sātvataṃ yuddhadurmadam ||
tāṃs tu sarvān sa balavān sātyaktir yuddhadurmadaḥ ||
nātikṛcchrād dhasann eva vijigye puruṣarṣabha ||
māgadhān dravato dṛṣṭvā hataśeṣān samantataḥ ||
balaṃ te 'bhajyata vibho yuyudhānaśarārditam ||
When that prince, the son of the king of Magadha, was slain, O lord, the Magadhas, arraying themselves from every side, rushed upon Yuyudhana [Satyaki], hurling arrows and thousands of darts, bhindipala-clubs, lances, maces, and pestles. The heroes fought in battle against Satvata, furious in combat. But all of them the mighty Satyaki, furious in battle, scattered; seeing the Magadhas fleeing, the survivors of the slaughter fleeing on every side, your army broke, O lord, torn apart by the arrows of Yuyudhana.

A whole storm of varied weapons breaks upon Satyaki alone -- arrows, tomaras, bhindipalas, maces, pestles -- and still he scatters the many. It is telling that abundance and variety of means do not overcome the one whose valor stands firm. The verse teaches that against a steadfast man the very multitude of instruments of death is powerless: the battle is decided not by number or diversity of weapons but by the firmness of spirit in the one against whom they are aimed; and a single man, guarded by his own valor, puts whole hosts to flight.
