उच्चावचानि रूपाणि चकार सुबहूनि च ॥
उच्चावचास् तथा वाचो व्याजहार समन्ततः ॥
तेन पाण्डवसैन्यानां मृदिता युधि वारणाः ॥
हयाश् च बहवो राजन् पत्तयश् च तथा पुनः ॥
रथेभ्यो रथिनः पेतुस् तस्य नुन्नाः स्म सायकैः ॥
शोणितोदां रथावर्तां हस्तिग्राहसमाकुलाम् ॥
छत्रहंसां कर्दमिनीं बाहुपन्नगसंकुलाम् ॥
नदीं प्रवर्तयाम् आस रक्षोगणसमाकुलाम् ॥
वहन्तीं बहुधा राजंश् चेदिपाञ्चालसृञ्जयान् ॥

nadīṃ pravartayām āsa rakṣogaṇasamākulām ||
vahantīṃ bahudhā rājaṃś cedipāñcālasṛñjayān ||
Manifold and very many forms he created, and manifold voices he uttered from every side. By him the elephants of the Pandava troops were trampled in battle, and many horses, O king, and footmen as well. Charioteers fell from their chariots, felled by his arrows. He set flowing a river—with blood for water, with chariots for whirlpools, teeming with elephant-crocodiles, with parasols for swans, miry, teeming with arms for serpents, teeming with hosts of rakshasas, sweeping away in multitudes, O king, the Chedis, the Panchalas, and the Srinjayas.

The rakshasa's illusion spreads out as a river of blood—"śoṇitodā", where chariots become whirlpools, severed arms become serpents, parasols become swans: horror is clothed in deceptive beauty. It is telling that evil fashions a semblance, dressing slaughter as fearsome splendor. The verse teaches that demonic power beguiles, dressing destruction in majestic images; and whoever yields to this illusory splendor is swept away by the flood, as the river swept away the Chedis and Panchalas—wherefore the righteous must see through the beautiful appearance to its bloody essence.
