अक्षतौ संयुगे तत्र प्रविष्टौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ ॥
न च वारयिता कश् चित् तयोर् अस्तीह संजय ॥
भृताश् च बहवो योधाः परीक्ष्यैव महारथाः ॥
वेतनेन यथायोग्यं प्रियवादेन चापरे ॥
अकारणभृतस् तात मम सैन्ये न विद्यते ॥
कर्मणा ह्य् अनुरूपेण लभ्यते भक्तवेतनम् ॥
akṣatau saṃyuge tatra praviṣṭau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau ||
na ca vārayitā kaś cit tayor astīha saṃjaya ||
bhṛtāś ca bahavo yodhāḥ parīkṣyaiva mahārathāḥ ||
vetanena yathāyogyaṃ priyavādena cāpare ||
akāraṇabhṛtas tāta mama sainye na vidyate ||
karmaṇā hy anurūpeṇa labhyate bhaktavetanam ||
Krishna and the Pandava, having entered the battle there unharmed — and there is no one here to restrain those two, Sanjaya. And many warriors, great warriors, have been hired after thorough testing — with wages, as is fitting, while others with kind words. There is no one in my army hired without cause, O dear one, for deserved pay is earned according to commensurate service.

The king keeps insisting on the fairness of the wages, as though searching for something to justify the defeat of a properly ordered army: "na ca vārayitā kaścit" — yet there is no one to hold back the two Krishnas. It is telling that the impeccability of the household does not answer the main question — why everything proved futile. The verse teaches that earthly justice in recompense is powerless where the outcome is decided by the higher will: one may pay everyone in good conscience, but neither wages nor training will stop the one behind whom the Lord stands.
