पाण्डुपाञ्चालसंभग्नं व्यूहम् आलोक्य वीर्यवान् ॥
शैनेये नाकरोद् यत्नं व्यूहस्यैवाभिरक्षणे ॥
निवार्य पाण्डुपाञ्चालान् द्रोणाग्निः प्रदहन्न् इव ॥
तस्थौ क्रोधाग्निसंदीप्तः कालसूर्य इवोदितः ॥

Traducción

Coming again to the gate of the formation, Drona took his stand there, carried by those horses that raced like the wind, wounded as they were by Vrishni's arrows. Seeing the formation broken by the Pandus and Panchalas, the valiant Drona made no effort against Shaineya, but turned instead to guarding the formation itself. Having checked the Pandus and Panchalas, Drona stood there like a blazing fire, kindled by the flame of wrath, like the risen sun of Doomsday.

Comentario

Drona sets aside his personal quarrel with Satyaki -- "shaineye na akarot yatnam" -- and turns to duty: "vyuhasya abhirakshane", the guarding of the formation. It is telling that the wise man chooses obligation over personal contest. The verse teaches that duty stands above a self-regarding duel: the true warrior does not chase personal victory at the expense of the task entrusted to him, but, setting scores aside, takes up the place where the army needs him -- for service to the whole matters more than triumph over a single foe.
