भीमसेनेन ते राजन् पाञ्चाल्येन च चोदिताः ॥
आजघ्नुः कौरवान् संख्ये त्यक्त्वासून् आत्मनः प्रियान् ॥
इच्छन्तो निधनं युद्धे शस्त्रैर् उत्तमतेजसः ॥
स्वर्गार्थं मित्रकार्यार्थं नाभ्यरक्षन्त जीवितम् ॥
तथैव तावका राजन् प्रार्थयन्तो महद् यशः ॥
आर्यां युद्धे मतिं कृत्वा युद्धायैवोपतस्थिरे ॥
bhīmasenena te rājan pāñcālyena ca coditāḥ ||
ājaghnuḥ kauravān saṃkhye tyaktvāsūn ātmanaḥ priyān ||
icchanto nidhanaṃ yuddhe śastrair uttamatejasaḥ ||
svargārthaṃ mitrakāryārthaṃ nābhyarakṣanta jīvitam ||
tathaiva tāvakā rājan prārthayanto mahad yaśaḥ ||
āryāṃ yuddhe matiṃ kṛtvā yuddhāyaivopatasthire ||
"Urged on by Bhimasena and the Panchalyan, they, O king, struck the Kauravas in battle, having given up their own dear lives. Desiring death in battle, warriors of supreme ardor, for heaven's sake and for the sake of a friend's cause, did not spare their lives. So too your men, O king, seeking great glory, having formed a noble resolve in battle, stood ready for the fight."

The warriors lay down their lives "svargārthaṃ mitrakāryārtham", for heaven's sake and for a friend's sake: the highest self-offering is to give oneself for one dear to one. It is telling that a friend's cause is set on the same level as the attainment of heaven. The verse teaches that there is no sacrifice higher than laying down one's life for a friend: whoever does not spare himself for another gains heaven too, for love that gives up life for another is also the surest path to the highest state.
