हत द्रोणं हत द्रोणम् इति ते द्रोणम् अभ्ययुः ॥
यतन्तः पुरुषव्याघ्राः सर्वशक्त्या महाद्युतिम् ॥
निनीषन्तो रणे द्रोणं यमस्य सदनं प्रति ॥
यतमानांस् तु तान् वीरान् भारद्वाजः शिलीमुखैः ॥
यमाय प्रेषयाम् आस चेदिमुख्यान् विशेषतः ॥
तेषु प्रक्षीयमाणेषु चेदिमुख्येषु भारत ॥
पाञ्चालाः समकम्पन्त द्रोणसायकपीडिताः ॥
hata droṇaṃ hata droṇam iti te droṇam abhyayuḥ ||
yatantaḥ puruṣavyāghrāḥ sarvaśaktyā mahādyutim ||
ninīṣanto raṇe droṇaṃ yamasya sadanaṃ prati ||
yatamānāṃs tu tān vīrān bhāradvājaḥ śilīmukhaiḥ ||
yamāya preṣayām āsa cedimukhyān viśeṣataḥ ||
teṣu prakṣīyamāṇeṣu cedimukhyeṣu bhārata ||
pāñcālāḥ samakampanta droṇasāyakapīḍitāḥ ||
"Strike down Drona, strike down Drona!" — so saying, they advanced upon Drona, those tigers among men, striving with all their strength against the greatly resplendent one. Those striving heroes the son of Bharadvaja sent to Yama with his arrows, the chiefs of the Chedis especially. As the chiefs of the Chedis dwindled, O Bharata, the Panchalas trembled, pressed hard by Drona's arrows.

The cry "hata droṇam," strike down Drona, avails nothing: those who strive he sends to Yama. It is telling that the united surge of many breaks against the mastery of one. The verse teaches that the common cry and the onrush of numbers are powerless against a true master: the formidable is overcome neither by loud calling nor by sheer count, but only by an equal skill or by the appointed hour — and until that hour comes, whoever rushes at him perishes.
