ततो विस्फार्य सुमहद् धेमपृष्ठं दुरासदम् ॥
चापं भरतशार्दूलस् त्यक्तात्मा कर्णम् अभ्ययात् ॥
स सायकमयैर् जालैर् भीमः कर्णरथं प्रति ॥
भानुमद्भिः शिलाधौतैर् भानोः प्रच्छादयत् प्रभाम् ॥
ततः प्रहस्याधिरथिस् तूर्णम् अस्यञ् शिताञ् शरान् ॥
व्यधमद् भीमसेनस्य शरजालानि पत्रिभिः ॥
tato visphārya sumahad dhemapṛṣṭhaṃ durāsadam ||
cāpaṃ bharataśārdūlas tyaktātmā karṇam abhyayāt ||
sa sāyakamayair jālair bhīmaḥ karṇarathaṃ prati ||
bhānumadbhiḥ śilādhautair bhānoḥ pracchādayat prabhām ||
tataḥ prahasyādhirathis tūrṇam asyañ śitāñ śarān ||
vyadhamad bhīmasenasya śarajālāni patribhiḥ ||
Then, drawing the enormous, gold-backed, unassailable bow, the tiger among the Bharatas, heedless of his own life, advanced upon Karna. With nets of arrows — radiant, whetted on stone — Bhima veiled the sun's radiance toward Karna's chariot. Then, laughing, the son of Adhiratha, swiftly loosing sharp arrows, scattered the nets of arrows of Bhimasena with his own feathered shafts.

"Tyaktātmā" — heedless of himself: Bhima goes into battle having set aside his very life, and so his arrows veil the sun. It is telling that Karna meets this fury with a laugh: laughter at a rival's rage is both composure and challenge at once. The verse teaches that one who has renounced himself is terrible in battle, but composure before the face of rage is its own strength; not only might contends with might, but calm with ardor.
