तद् उद्धूतं बलं दृष्ट्व रथनागाश्वपत्तिमत् ॥
भीमः कर्णं समासाद्य छादयाम् आस सायकैः ॥
अश्वान् ऋश्यसवर्णांस् तु हंसवर्णैर् हयोत्तमैः ॥
व्यामिश्रयद् रणे कर्णः पाण्डवं छादयञ् शरैः ॥
tataḥ pradhmāpya jalajaṃ bherīśatanināditam ||
akṣubhyata balaṃ harṣād uddhūta iva sāgaraḥ ||
tad uddhūtaṃ balaṃ dṛṣṭva rathanāgāśvapattimat ||
bhīmaḥ karṇaṃ samāsādya chādayām āsa sāyakaiḥ ||
aśvān ṛśyasavarṇāṃs tu haṃsavarṇair hayottamaiḥ ||
vyāmiśrayad raṇe karṇaḥ pāṇḍavaṃ chādayañ śaraiḥ ||
Then, having sounded the conch, resounding like a hundred kettledrums, the army was stirred with joy, like a surging ocean. Seeing that surging army with its chariots, elephants, horses, and foot, Bhima, reaching Karna, showered him with arrows. And Karna, in the fight, mingled the rishya-colored horses of Bhima with his own swan-white, superb horses, covering the Pandava with arrows.

The duel of two men stirs a whole army, as wind stirs the ocean: the clash of chieftains shakes the entire host. It is telling how the horses, dark and white, are woven together in a single whirl: in the melee of battle the line between one's own and the foe's is erased. The verse teaches that war draws even the uninvolved into its vortex, and so whoever unleashes it answers not for himself alone, but for all whom that vortex sweeps up.
