अन्योन्यं प्रजिहीर्षन्ताव् अन्योन्यस्यान्तरैषिणौ ॥
अन्योन्यम् अभिवीक्षन्तौ गोष्ठेष्व् इव महर्षभौ ॥
महागजाव् इवासाद्य विषाणाग्रैः परस्परम् ॥
शरैः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैर् अन्योन्यम् अभिजघ्नतुः ॥
निर्दहन्तौ महाराज शरवृष्ट्या परस्परम् ॥
अन्योन्यम् अभिवीक्षन्तौ कोपाद् विवृतलोचनौ ॥
प्रहसन्तौ तथान्योन्यं भर्त्सयन्तौ मुहुर् मुहुः ॥
शङ्खशब्दं च कुर्वाणौ युयुधाते परस्परम् ॥
anyonyaṃ prajihīrṣantāv anyonyasyāntaraiṣiṇau ||
anyonyam abhivīkṣantau goṣṭheṣv iva maharṣabhau ||
mahāgajāv ivāsādya viṣāṇāgraiḥ parasparam ||
śaraiḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭair anyonyam abhijaghnatuḥ ||
nirdahantau mahārāja śaravṛṣṭyā parasparam ||
anyonyam abhivīkṣantau kopād vivṛtalocanau ||
prahasantau tathānyonyaṃ bhartsayantau muhur muhuḥ ||
śaṅkhaśabdaṃ ca kurvāṇau yuyudhāte parasparam ||
"Each seeking to strike the other, each seeking out the other's weakness, staring fixedly at one another like two mighty bulls in cattle-pens; like two great elephants, having met with the tips of their tusks, they struck one another with arrows released at full draw. Consuming one another with a shower of arrows, O great king, staring at one another with eyes wide from wrath, mocking each other and threatening again and again, blowing their conches, they battled one another."

Mockery and threat are woven into the battle no less than the arrows: wounding the foe's spirit seems as important as wounding his body. It is significant that the gaze searching for weakness is described three times: enmity is turned wholly outward, toward another's flaw, and blind to its own. The verse teaches that scorn for an opponent is not strength but a squandering of spirit; whoever looks only for the crack in another does not see the fracture in himself.
