संजय उवाच
तत उत्थाय शैनेयो विमुक्तः सौमदत्तिना ॥
खड्गम् आदाय चिच्छित्सुः शिरस् तस्य महात्मनः ॥
निहतं पाण्डुपुत्रेण प्रमत्तं भूरिदक्षिणम् ॥
इयेष सात्यकिर् हन्तुं शलाग्रजम् अकल्मषम् ॥
निकृत्तभुजम् आसीनं छिन्नहस्तम् इव द्विपम् ॥
क्रोशतां सर्वसैन्यानां निन्द्यमानः सुदुर्मनाः ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
tata utthāya śaineyo vimuktaḥ saumadattinā ||
khaḍgam ādāya cicchitsuḥ śiras tasya mahātmanaḥ ||
nihataṃ pāṇḍuputreṇa pramattaṃ bhūridakṣiṇam ||
iyeṣa sātyakir hantuṃ śalāgrajam akalmaṣam ||
nikṛttabhujam āsīnaṃ chinnahastam iva dvipam ||
krośatāṃ sarvasainyānāṃ nindyamānaḥ sudurmanāḥ ||
Then, rising, the Shaineya [Satyaki], released by the Saumadatti, took up his sword, desiring to cut off the head of that great-souled one -- already struck down by the son of Pandu, absorbed [in yoga], Bhuridakshina. Satyaki resolved to slay the elder brother of Shala, sinless, sitting with his arm severed like an elephant with its trunk cut off -- while all the armies cried out in reproach, and he himself was in great distress of mind.

Satyaki, barely risen, raises his sword over one unarmed, sinless, absorbed in prayer -- and the whole army cries out in condemnation. It is significant that he himself is "in great distress of mind": even the one committing the wrong feels its weight. The verse teaches that a grievance left unreleased drives one to a deed condemned by all; the thirst for vengeance is blind to the sanctity of the adversary -- it raises the blade over one at prayer, heeding neither the cry of the living nor the voice of its own conscience.
