एतच् छ्रुत्वा सिन्धुराजो ध्यात्वा चिरम् अरिंदम ॥
ज्ञातीन् सर्वान् उवाचेदं पुत्रस्नेहाभिपीडितः ॥
संग्रामे युध्यमानस्य वहतो महतीं धुरम् ॥
धरण्यां मम पुत्रस्य पातयिष्यति यः शिरः ॥
तस्यापि शतधा मूर्धा फलिष्यति न संशयः ॥
एवम् उक्त्वा ततो राज्ये स्थापयित्वा जयद्रथम् ॥
वृद्धक्षत्रो वनं यातस् तपश्चेष्टं समास्थितः ॥
etac chrutvā sindhurājo dhyātvā ciram ariṃdama ||
jñātīn sarvān uvācedaṃ putrasnehābhipīḍitaḥ ||
saṃgrāme yudhyamānasya vahato mahatīṃ dhuram ||
dharaṇyāṃ mama putrasya pātayiṣyati yaḥ śiraḥ ||
tasyāpi śatadhā mūrdhā phaliṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ||
evam uktvā tato rājye sthāpayitvā jayadratham ||
vṛddhakṣatro vanaṃ yātas tapaśceṣṭaṃ samāsthitaḥ ||
'Having heard this, the Sindhu king, having pondered long, O chastiser of enemies, afflicted by love for his son, said this to all his kinsmen: "Whoever should cast down to the ground the head of my son, fighting in battle, bearing a great burden — [his own head shall split]." Having spoken thus, then, having established Jayadratha on the throne, Vriddhakshatra went into the forest, took up asceticism.'

Love for his son drives the father to utter a curse: whoever casts Jayadratha's head to the ground shall have his own head split. It is telling that this very curse will turn back upon Vriddhakshatra himself. The verse teaches that blind attachment, straining to protect the one it loves, often digs a pit for itself; and a curse spoken out of fear for a son falls, in its hour, upon the head of the one who uttered it — for fate cannot be turned aside by an incantation.
