सो ऽजिघांसुर् गुरुं संख्ये गुरोस् तनयम् एव च ॥
चकाराचार्यकं तत्र कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ॥
अस्त्रैर् अस्त्राणि संवार्य द्रौणेः शारद्वतस्य च ॥
मन्दवेगान् इषूंस् ताभ्याम् अजिघांसुर् अवासृजत् ॥
ते नातिभृशम् अभ्यघ्नन् विशिखा जयचोदिताः ॥
बहुत्वात् तु पराम् आर्तिं शराणां ताव् अगच्छताम् ॥
so 'jighāṃsur guruṃ saṃkhye guros tanayam eva ca ||
cakārācāryakaṃ tatra kuntīputro dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
astrair astrāṇi saṃvārya drauṇeḥ śāradvatasya ca ||
mandavegān iṣūṃs tābhyām ajighāṃsur avāsṛjat ||
te nātibhṛśam abhyaghnan viśikhā jayacoditāḥ ||
bahutvāt tu parām ārtiṃ śarāṇāṃ tāv agacchatām ||
He, not wishing to kill the teacher in battle nor the teacher's son, showed there the duty of a disciple, the son of Kunti, Dhananjaya. Warding off astras with astras of Drauni and Sharadvata [Kripa], not wishing to kill, he loosed weak arrows at those two. They, the arrows sent for the sake of victory, struck not too fiercely; but from the multitude of arrows those two experienced supreme anguish.

Arjuna "shows discipleship" in the midst of battle — sparing his teacher, sending deliberately weakened arrows: reverence for the guru does not leave him even on the field of war. It is telling that he wards off their weapons but does not strike to kill: he joins the duty of victory to the duty of filial respect. The verse teaches that even in unavoidable confrontation with one revered, ways must be sought that spare him; awe before the teacher stands higher than the thirst for an easy kill.
